What is the ASWB exam?

Social workers must possess state licensure to practice professional social work. To receive their license, candidates must take and pass the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) examination as a measure of competency.

How do I qualify for the ASWB exam?

In order to register, you must first determine your eligibility to take the exam. Apply for licensure through your jurisdiction’s social work licensing board.

How do I register for the ASWB exam?

Once you have received confirmation that you may take the ASWB examination, you may register for the ASWB exam online.

What’s on the ASWB exam?

The ASWB provides exams at five levels. The exam you take depends on the level of education you have completed and the level at which you hope to practice social work.

The exams measure knowledge of social work–specific content areas, like human development and behavior, social and economic justice, and intervention processes.

How many questions are on the ASWB exam?

Each ASWB exam is made up of 170 multiple-choice questions.

How long is the ASWB exam?

You have four hours to complete the ASWB exam.

Where can I take the ASWB exam?

Pearson VUE administers the exam in a computerized format at testing centers across the nation.

When will I get my ASWB exam score?

You will receive your unofficial scores immediately after completing the exam.

How is the ASWB exam scored?

Of the 170 questions on the exam, only 150 are scored; the other 20 are experimental “pretest” questions. However, you must answer all 170 questions because the pretest questions are not marked.

What is a good ASWB score?

The ASWB exam is a pass/fail exam. Your score is determined by the number of questions you answer correctly. The minimum score to earn social work licensure varies by state.

Can I retake the ASWB exam?

If you fail your ASWB exam, you may retake the test after ninety days.
